LSPD Public Notice for Public Comments

The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) has scheduled the Lee’s Summit Police Department for an On-Site Assessment as part of a program to achieve re-accreditation for the Department by verifying it meets professional standards. The accreditation program requires agencies to comply with state-of-the-art standards in four basic areas: policy and procedures, administration, operations and support services.

The International Association of Chiefs of Police, National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, National Sheriffs’ Association, and Police Executive Research Forum created the Commission in 1979. Their purpose was to establish and administer an accreditation process through which law enforcement agencies could demonstrate voluntarily their ability to meet professionally recognized criteria for excellence in management and service delivery.

The Lee’s Summit Police Department received CALEA initial accreditation in July, 2011. The department received re-accreditation in 2014 and 2017. A CALEA examination constitutes a stringent peer review. Each accredited agency must undergo a reassessment once every four years to maintain accreditation.
As part of the on-site assessment, Lee’s Summit Police Department employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session on Tuesday, April 13th at 5:00 PM. The session will be conducted in the Municipal courtroom in the Police Department Building via Zoom with the Assessment Team, located at 10 NE Tudor Road, Lee’s Summit, MO.

Lee’s Summit Police Department employees and the public are also invited to offer comments during a “telephone call-in” session on Tuesday, April 13th between the hours of 3:00 and 4:30 PM. Comments will be taken by the CALEA Assessment Team, Assistant Chief William Buckbee and Lieutenant Robert Sanders. The phone number for the call-in session is 816-969-4151.

Telephone comments as well as appearances at the public information session are limited to ten (10) minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA’s standards. A copy of the standards can be reviewed at the Lee’s Summit Police Department, 10 NE Tudor Road, Lee’s Summit, MO, by contacting Accreditation Manager Tanisha Artis at 816-969-4151.

Anyone wishing to submit written comments about the Lee’s Summit Police Department’s ability to comply with the standards for accreditation may send them to the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, Inc. (CALEA), 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 320,
Gainesville, VA 20155-6660 or www.calea.org. For emails, please use “Lee’s Summit (MO) Police Department” as the subject line.
