Citizen's Police Academy

The Citizen's Police Academy is a 10-week, 30-hour educational program that provides information about the daily operations of the Police Department. It is an opportunity for the Police Department and citizens to interact and exchange ideas on community safety. 

The Academy sessions are held on Tuesday evenings, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m in the Fall of each year.  

Our next Citizens Academy will take place in the Fall of 2023; applications will be accepted at any time with a projected start date sometime in September of 2023.

 There is no fee for the course. Participants will learn about the following topics:

  • Patrol Tactics
  • Bomb Disposal
  • Emergency Services Squad
  • Drug, Criminal and Juvenile Investigations
  • Traffic and DWI Enforcement
  • Criminal Law
  • K-9 Unit
  • Firearms
  • Crime Scene Investigation
  • Specialized Weapons.

Applicants must be 17 years of age, pass a criminal history check and have no felony arrests. Preference is given to Lee's Summit residents or business owners.

If accepted, applicants will be notified in writing two weeks prior to the start of the academy. Class size is limited to 30 participants.                    

Completion of this program DOES NOT certify a citizen as a police officer or a reserve officer.
