Citizens Police Academy

The Citizens Police Academy is a free nine-week, 27-hour educational program that provides information about the daily operations of the Police Department. It is an opportunity for the department and citizens to interact and allows citizens to learn more about the Police Department in their community. 

Academy sessions are held during the fall on Tuesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. Applicants must be 17 years of age, pass a criminal history check and have no felony arrests. Preference is given to residents or business owners of Lee's Summit. Class size is limited to 30 participants.

There is no fee for the course. Participants will learn about the following topics:

  • Patrol Tactics
  • Bomb Disposal
  • Emergency Services Squad
  • Drug, Criminal and Juvenile Investigations
  • Traffic and DWI Enforcement
  • Criminal Law
  • K-9 Unit
  • Firearms
  • Crime Scene Investigation
  • Specialized Weapons

If accepted, applicants will be notified in writing two weeks before the start of the academy.                     

Completion of this program DOES NOT certify a citizen as a police officer or a reserve officer.
