The Citizen's Police Academy is a 10-week, 30-hour educational program that provides information about the daily operations of the Police Department. It is an opportunity for the Police Department and citizens to interact and exchange ideas on community safety.
In past years, the academy would meet on Tuesday evenings, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m in the spring of each year. COVID restrictions have made it impossible to host the course in 2020 and 2021. We are hopeful that the course will resume in the Fall of 2022. If the Fall course is successful we will evaluate keeping the course as a Fall offering. Once a date is set for the Fall 2022 program we will notify applicants from the 2020 class that was cancelled as well as welcome applications from any new applicants.
There is no fee for the course. Participants will learn about the following topics:
- Patrol Tactics
- Bomb Disposal
- Emergency Services Squad
- Drug, Criminal and Juvenile Investigations
- Traffic and DWI Enforcement
- Criminal Law
- K-9 Unit
- Crime Scene Investigation
- Specialized Weapons.
Applications will be accepted once the new class dates are set for 2022.. Applicants must be 17 years of age, pass a criminal history check and have no felony arrests. Preference is given to Lee's Summit residents or business owners.
