The Lee's Summit Police Department Bomb Squad was established in 1974. The unit is comprised of four highly trained bomb technicians who are certified through the FBI's Hazardous Devices School (HDS) at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama.
Before attending HDS, each bomb technician must successfully complete Hazardous Materials Operations training and become certified as a Hazardous Materials Operator. Technicians then attend the FBI's intensive six-week Hazardous Devices School certification program. To maintain certification and remain current on the latest techniques, equipment, and emerging threats, each technician returns to HDS every three years for mandatory recertification training.
The Bomb Squad's primary mission is to protect the public by safely responding to incidents involving:
- Bomb threats
- Suspicious packages
- Improvised explosive devices (IEDs)
- Military ordnance
- Post-blast investigations
- Explosives recovery, identification, and disposal
The Bomb Squad is equipped and trained to safely manage incidents ranging from small improvised explosive devices to large vehicle-borne explosive threats.
In addition to serving the City of Lee's Summit, the Bomb Squad provides mutual aid assistance to local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies throughout the region when requested.
All bomb technicians are federally deputized as Special Deputy U.S. Marshals. Through this partnership, the team may be called upon to assist with explosive-related incidents anywhere in the United States.
The Lee's Summit Police Department Bomb Squad is committed to maintaining the highest standards of training, professionalism, and public safety. Community members can learn more about the unit and see specialized equipment during demonstrations held during the Lee's Summit Police Department's annual Citizens Police Academy.
