 Chief Travis Forbes

Chief Forbes began his career in law enforcement on May 14th, 1992, with the Independence Missouri Police Department.  He attended the 84th Kansas City Regional Police Academy class and graduated as Valedictorian.

Travis graduated Summa Cum Laude from Park University in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management and Human Resources. He was also selected by the university as most outstanding student for the Independence campus.

Travis went on to earn his Masters degree in Public Administration from the University of Nebraska-Omaha in 2004.  He was one of three graduates selected for the national Public Administration Honors Society, Pi Alpha Alpha.

Travis is also a 2007 graduate of the School of Police Staff and Command from the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety. 

Travis authored the criminal justice textbook “The Investigation of Crime,” published in 2008.

Travis’s career includes work in patrol, investigations, narcotics, special operations, and administration.  

In 1998, Travis was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and served as a supervisor in Uniform Patrol.  In 2001, Sergeant Forbes was selected as a member to the Kansas City Metro Drug Task Force, Drug Enforcement Unit where he served until 2003.

In 2003, Travis was promoted to the rank of Captain and placed in the position of supervisor over the Independence Police Department’s Drug Enforcement Unit. In 2004, he was transferred to the position of supervisor over the Criminal Investigations Division.

In 2006, Travis was promoted to the rank of Major and served as the Commander of the Special Operations Division, the Patrol Division, and then the Administrative Division.

Travis was promoted to Deputy Chief in 2013 and commanded the Operations Support Bureau.  

Travis has had numerous letters of appreciation, commendations, and awards throughout his career, and was selected Officer of the Month twice for the Department.  Travis was also selected as the City of Independence Employee of the Month during his tenure as a Major.   The Investigations Unit received a Special Unit Citation in 2005 while under Travis’ command.

Travis’ wife, Michelle, is a school teacher for the Fort Osage School District.  They have three children: Tanner, Logan, and Raven.  Travis’ father is the current Chief of Police in Lone Jack, Missouri, after retiring from the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department.  Travis’ grandfather was with the Missouri State Highway Patrol.


Major Mike Childs

Major Mike Childs began with the Lee’s Summit Police Department in 1989 after his enlistment in the U.S. Air Force earning promotion below the zone and recognition as 15thAir Force Outstanding 1st Term Airman.

After three years with the department he was selected in 1992 as the first K-9 officer and spent six years in the unit working with canine partner Caiy. He then became a D.A.R.E. officer in both elementary and middle school instruction before selection in 2002 as the department public information officer which he fulfilled for eight years.    

Major Childs was promoted to Sergeant in 2005 fulfilling supervisory positions in Administration, Operations and Investigations before being promoted to Captain in 2012 as a shift commander in Operations, then promoted to Major in 2015 as the Operations Commander.

Major Childs is a graduate of the Missouri Police Chiefs Association Command School and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Management and Leadership, and a Master of Arts degree in Sociology/Criminal Justice. He works closely with Lee’s Summit Cares, a liaison with Lee’s Summit Parks & Recreation, a member of the Missouri Police Chiefs Association and the Metro Police Chief and Sheriff’s Association.

Major Curt Mansell

Major Curt Mansell has served the City of Lee’s Summit, MO since 1991.  Prior to that, he was a Police Officer with the City of Liberty, MO.  Major Mansell has served in numerous capacitates throughout the department.  Curt was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2000, Captain in 2007 and Major in 2008 where he served as the Patrol Division Commander.  He currently serves as the Division Commander of the Criminal Investigations Division.

Before beginning his law enforcement career, Major Mansell graduated from Central Missouri State University with a B.S. Degree in Criminal Justice Administration.  He is a 2007 graduate of Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command and in 2012 graduated from the 250th Session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA.  He is a member of the Missouri Police Chief’s Association; the Metropolitan Police Chief’s Association and has been a Lee’s Summit resident since 1991.

 Major John Boenker

Major John Boenker has been with the Lee’s Summit Police department since 1994.  He was originally hired as a Detention Officer and in 1995 when the hiring process opened for the position of Police Officer, John was selected to fill the slot.  Then in 2006, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant, 2008 to Captain, and in 2011 he was promoted to Major.

Major Boenker attended Longview Community College and graduated from Central Missouri State University in 1995 with a B.S. in Criminal Justice.
During his service to the department, he has served in the Operations Division, Traffic Unit, and Criminal Investigations Unit.  He had also been assigned the tasks of CALEA Team Coordinator, Public Information Officer, and School Resource Officer.

Major Boenker is actively involved with the Lee’s Summit Football Association, Lee’s Summit Baseball Association, Lee’s Summit Christian Church, Metropolitan Chief’s and Sheriff’s Association, and the Missouri Police Chief’s Association.

Major Mark Taylor

Major Mark Taylor began his career in law enforcement when he was hired by the Lee’s Summit Police Department in 1988.  Prior to that, he graduated from Lee’s Summit High School in 1981, and was a graduate of Central Missouri State University in 1985.

In 2002, Mark was promoted to Sergeant and served in Operations until May, 2007 when he was assigned Sergeant over juvenile investigations.  After his promotion to Sergeant, he graduated from Police Staff and Command School at Northwestern University.  In November of 2007, he was promoted to Captain and supervised in the Operations Division.  In 2008, he was assigned as the Captain over the Criminal Investigations Division where he served until his promotion to Major in 2011.   Currently, Major Taylor is assigned to the Support Services Division which is over the Communications Unit, Detention Unit, and Animal Control.

Major Taylor is actively involved with Lee’s Summit CARES, Lee’s Summit/Raytown Community Credit Union Board Member, Leadership Lee’s Summit Graduate, Department Liaison for the Raintree Home Owners Association, Metropolitan Chief’s and Sheriff’s Association, and the Missouri Police Chief’s Association.
