The project team led by the City of Lee’s Summit and LANE4 Property Group is pleased to announce a ceremony for the groundbreaking of the Downtown Market Plaza on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at 4:30 p.m. The ceremony will mark the commencement of construction for the highly anticipated, mixed-use project located in Downtown Lee’s Summit across from City Hall at Third and Green streets. The first phase of the project is expected to be complete in spring 2025 and includes a four-season Farmer’s Market and Event Space, a covered Outdoor Performance Area, and a Streetscaped Pavilion. The City of Lee’s Summit will host a Career Fair & Expo from 2 to 7 p.m., Oct. 18 at the Gamber Community Center, 4 SE Independence Ave. Job seekers will find outstanding job opportunities with the City of Lee’s Summit in a number of departments. The event is free and open to the public. The City offers meaningful work that positively impacts the safety and quality of life for our residents. Professionals representing Development Services, Parks and Recreation, Public Works, Water Utilities, Law, Information Systems and the Police and Fire Departments will be in attendance. Residents, businesses, community groups and students are encouraged to join the City of Lee’s Summit on Oct. 14 for Sweep the Summit, a citywide event to address ongoing litter issues, encourage recycling and keep the City clean. Two environmental cleanups, Street Clean and Stream Team, will be held from 10 a.m. to noon. Street Clean volunteers will tackle trash and illegal dumping along certain city-owned streets. Participants are asked to meet at the City’s Maintenance Facility, 1971 SE Hamblen Road, to receive street assignments, trash bags and safety vests. The Stream Team will address stream-side habitats within the City’s parks. During this event, cleanup efforts will concentrate on East Fork Little Blue Creek in Langsford Park. The City of Lee’s Summit will host an in-person public hearing to discuss the design for the Ward and Persels Intersection Improvements project from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2023, at Pleasant Lea Middle School, located at 630 SW Persels Road in Lee’s Summit, Mo. 64081. The public will have an opportunity to view project plans and exhibits and provide feedback. There will be no formal presentation and the hearing will be open house style; the public can come and go as schedules allow. Project plans and exhibits prepared by the City’s design consultant Garver USA will be available to view, and attendees will have the opportunity to discuss the project and offer comments.

The City of Lee’s Summit, in partnership with the Community Blood Center, will host a blood drive on Monday, Oct. 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the City’s Maintenance Facility located at 1971 SE Hamblen Road. The Community Blood Center says now more than ever is the time to donate. According to the American Red Cross, national blood supply has fallen about 25% since early August. Individuals who are healthy and well are encouraged to make an appointment. Donors can register at savealifenow.org/group using the group code KCJN. There are certain requirements to donate blood. Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good overall health. Donors can be 16 years old with written consent from a parent or legal guardian.
