Lee's Summit Parks and Recreation, along with the City of Lee's Summit, announce the annual Independence Day-themed fireworks event, Legacy Blast, on Monday, July 3, at Legacy Park.
Choreographed music will accompany the fireworks display, which will be simulcast on 94.9 KCMO. There will be concessions, food trucks, and DJs at the baseball, soccer, softball, and football venues. Children under the age of 12 can enjoy balloon artists, inflatables, and glitter tattoo artists.

In conjunction with Earth Day, the City of Lee’s Summit is launching Sweep the Summit on Saturday, April 22, a biannual event to address ongoing litter issues, encourage recycling and help keep our city beautiful. Residents, businesses, community groups and students are encouraged to take part in one or all of the four environmental activities planned throughout the City. The events include Street Clean, Stream Team, RecycleFEST and Drug Take-Back Day.
Street Clean is a coordinated volunteer effort to tackle litter and debris on specific segments of city-owned streets. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will gather at 10 a.m. at the City’s Maintenance Facility, 1971 SE Hamblen Road, to receive street assignments, trash bags and safety vests. The City of Lee’s Summit is hosting a public meeting from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wed., April 19, in the Strother Conference Room on the first floor of City Hall, 220 SE Green St., Lee's Summit, Mo. 64063, to discuss infrastructure improvements for the Douglas Street corridor from Chipman Road to 2nd Street. The meeting will allow the public to view conceptual plans and exhibits and provide feedback.

On April 4, Lee’s Summit voters will be presented with three no tax increase general obligation bond questions totaling $186 million to fund emergency preparedness, transportation and city facilities reinvestment. A fourth ballot question asks voters to consider a 3% sales tax on all retail sales of adult use, non-medical marijuana.
Question 1 would provide $74 million in funding for key public safety improvements that will provide public access and enhance safety and emergency services for the community. The 22 proposed projects include a Joint Operations Facility to house Fire Administration, the Emergency Operations Center, network infrastructure, co-located fire and police emergency communications and traffic monitoring/management support. The City’s crews prepared trucks and will be called in as needed tonight, Thurs., March 16, and overnight into Fri., March 17, due to the potential for a refreeze. Rain may change over to snow/sleet, and temperatures are expected to drop. High winds should dry out pavements; however, crews will be called in as needed to apply salt treatment in case any wet pavement refreezes. Drivers should be aware of the potential for refreeze especially on elevated surfaces such as bridges and overpasses.
