The City of Lee’s Summit is hosting its free RecycleFEST on Oct. 22 from 9 a.m. to noon at the City’s Maintenance Facility, 1971 SE Hamblen Road. RecycleFEST offers Lee’s Summit residents an opportunity to dispose of a variety of items in an environmentally friendly manner for free. According to the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI), 66% of Americans will not recycle a product if it’s not easy or inconvenient to do so. Recycling and composting help save natural resources and creates cleaner land, air, water and better overall health for all. RecycleFEST collects materials that can be recycled and refurbished, reducing harm to the environment and saving landfill space. Update 2/28/23: Both eastbound and westbound lanes of SW 3rd Street from SW Blue Parkway to SW Jefferson Street are now open to through traffic. Utility work continues primarily in the center/middle lane as the crew is still proofing the pipe and pulling cables through the duct bank. This work is anticipated to be complete in two weeks, weather permitting. A section of SW 3rd Street from SW Blue Parkway to SW Jefferson Street is set to close to through traffic beginning Mon., Oct. 10, 2022, through February 2023. Eastbound SW 3rd Street traffic will be detoured to SW Blue Parkway and westbound SW 3rd Street traffic will be detoured to SW 2nd Street. The City of Lee’s Summit, in partnership with the Community Blood Center, will host a blood drive on Oct. 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Gamber Community Center, 4 SE Independence Ave. The Community Blood Center needs donations, especially type O, Rh negative and platelet donors. The Community Blood Center says now more than ever is the time to donate. The COVID-19 outbreak is still impacting the blood supply needed to support the health agencies within our communities. Individuals who are healthy and well are encouraged to make an appointment. Donors can register at savealifenow.org/group using the group code KCJN. There are certain requirements to donate blood. The City of Lee’s Summit is looking for volunteers to participate in a Stream Team Cleanup on October 8. Volunteers will help remove litter and debris from a Prairie Lee tributary from 10 a.m. - noon at Upper Banner Park, 520 NE Noeleen Lane. “Protecting our natural resources is a priority and this is a small way to invest in the community,” Environmentalist Specialist Kara Taylor said. “Stream Team cleanup events are an opportunity to not only restore the beauty of our streams but improve water quality, prevent flash floods and ultimately influence the overall health of our bodies of water downstream.” The Stream Team is a volunteer effort coordinated by the City’s Public Works Department that involves collecting litter and debris from specific sections of local streams. Update: This section of NW O'Brien Road is now open. Update: This section of NW O'Brien Road will remain closed until Saturday, Oct. 22, weather permitting. A section of NW O’Brien Road from NW Village Drive to NW Transition is set to close on Monday, Sept. 26, and will remain closed until Oct. 17, weather permitting. This closure is pending the re-opening of NW Chipman Road under the U.S. Route 50 bridges. The work is necessary to perform water main replacement work as part of the FY22 Water Main Rehabilitation project. The detour route is NW Ward Road, NW Chipman Road, and NW Murray Road.
