Six members of the Lee's Summit Fire Department earned their certificate of completion for their paramedic program, which began in October of 2021. Their next step is to complete their practical and written exams, which will allow them to become licensed paramedics in the State of Missouri. Please join us in congratulating Engineer Sandra Hughes, Firefighter Brennan Johnson, Firefighter James Heuer, Firefighter Owen Ellis, Firefighter Cameron Shultz, and Firefighter Laura Kreglo! 

Today is the start of National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. The Lee's Summit Fire Department wants to recognize our dedicated Communication Specialists (Fire and EMS Dispatchers) and their work to ensure the safety of the public and first responders in the field. They are the true first responders, the first voice someone hears when calling 911 for help! Providing prearrival instructions before responders arrive and managing the response resources of six fire departments and fire protection districts (Lee's Summit, Fort Osage, Lone Jack, Southern Jackson County, Sni-Valley, and Pleasant Hill) for more than 20,000 incidents in 2022. Thank you for all you do!

On Saturday, April 8, 2023, at 2:45 pm, the Lee’s Summit Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 600 Block of NW Village Drive. Several callers reported fire coming from the house. 

When the fire department arrived, heavy smoke and fire was coming from the single-story, single-family residence. The occupant was outside.

Firefighters initiated a defensive attack on the fire due to the weakened condition of the structure. The only occupant was confirmed safe outside. However, a dog was missing and believed to be inside still. The fire was under control by 3:08 pm.  

The fire caused extensive damage to the house. The fire was determined to have originated in the backyard. Embers from trash burning in a grill next to the house ignited dry vegetation and spread to the structure.

On April 4, Lee’s Summit voters will be presented with three no tax increase general obligation bond questions totaling $186 million to fund emergency preparedness, transportation and city facilities reinvestment. A fourth ballot question asks voters to consider a 3% sales tax on all retail sales of adult use, non-medical marijuana.  Question 1 would provide $74 million in funding for key public safety improvements that will provide public access and enhance safety and emergency services for the community. The 22 proposed projects include a Joint Operations Facility to house Fire Administration, the Emergency Operations Center, network infrastructure, co-located fire and police emergency communications and traffic monitoring/management support. The facility would enhance the City’s capabilities during emergency operations as well as day-to-day emergency response...

The Awards Committee recognized Engineer Nelson's exemplary level of dedication and commitment to the department. Engineer Nelson consistently strives to improve everything and everyone around him, and his leadership role with the PEER Support Program keeps firefighter behavioral health at the forefront of daily operations.
