On February 23, 2023, at 10:47 pm, the Lee’s Summit Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in a duplex at NW Maple and NW Main Street. The reporting party was a duplex resident who discovered a fire in the neighboring unit.   When the fire department arrived, the fire was visible from the front, side, and roof of one side of the single-story duplex. The reporting occupant was outside. Firefighters attacked the fire from the outside, then went inside to complete extinguishment and search the building. The fire was under control by 11:20 pm. A check of the neighboring unit found light smoke, but no fire spread past the fire barrier separating the duplex. The resident of the fire unit was found in a nearby parking lot and taken by ambulance to a Metro area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.  The fire caused heavy damage to one...

The City of Lee’s Summit is currently seeking residents to serve on two newly created commissions, the Cultural Commission and the Wellness Commission. The City’s commissions are supported by volunteers seeking to be involved in local government and meet on a regular basis. The Cultural Commission will advise the City Council on recommendations regarding art and cultural programming, community aesthetics and historic preservation issues relevant to citizens and visitors. Key functions include advising and supporting the implementation of initiatives, working with other entities to encourage the incorporation of artistic, cultural, historic, tourism and beautification efforts, increasing public awareness of cultural and historical resources, and serving as the City’s historic preservation commission. On Thursday, Jan. 19, the City of Lee’s Summit City Council unanimously passed a resolution expressing opposition to the location of a landfill outside the corporate City limits and near the border of the City. The resolution is in response to the potential development of a landfill within the city limits of Kansas City, located between 155th Street and 150 Highway, and Horridge Road on the west to Peterson Road on the east.      City Council acknowledges there will be a need for a landfill to serve the metropolitan area in the future, however, any attempt to do so should be undertaken with the full engagement of the entire metropolitan area, inclusive of impacted counties, cities and residents.
