The City of Lee's Summit will celebrate the completion of the Chipman Road Improvements project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Aug. 1 at 10 a.m. The event will be held on the east side of the pedestrian bridge on Chipman Road. The Chipman Road Improvements project, which began construction in July 2023, enhances the corridor that serves as a key transportation route for residents and businesses. The completed upgrades include the connection of Northwest Ashurst Drive to View High Drive, realignments of both Northwest Cedar Creek Lane and Northwest Edgewood Drive, and the replacement of a one-lane railroad tunnel with a new pedestrian bridge over Chipman Road that supports two-way traffic. Lee’s Summit Public Works is excited to announce it has received reaccreditation from the American Public Works Association (APWA). This achievement recognizes the department’s commitment to excellence in public works management and operations. APWA accreditation is a rigorous process that evaluates public works agencies against industry best practices. By earning this accreditation, City of Lee’s Summit Public Works demonstrates its dedication to providing high-quality services to the community. This is the department’s sixth accreditation since 2004, solidifying its position as a leader in public works management. Open to all governmental agencies with responsibilities for public works functions, initial accreditation from APWA is for a four-year period. The City of Lee’s Summit announced that work on the Colbern Road Improvements Project begins Sept. 5. The project will improve the safety and flow of traffic on Northwest Colbern Road between Northeast Douglas Street and Missouri Route 350 and will require that section of road to be closed to through traffic until spring 2025.   The first phase of construction will require a complete closure of Northwest Colbern Road from approximately Missouri Route 350 through the roundabout at Northwest Blue Parkway. This phase includes the reconstruction of the roundabout and realignment of Northwest Blue Parkway from the roundabout to the frontage road along Unity Village. This closure will continue through spring 2024, weather permitting. Detours will be put in place and signage will mark the detour route. The City of Lee’s Summit is looking for volunteers to participate in a Stream Team Cleanup on October 8. Volunteers will help remove litter and debris from a Prairie Lee tributary from 10 a.m. - noon at Upper Banner Park, 520 NE Noeleen Lane. “Protecting our natural resources is a priority and this is a small way to invest in the community,” Environmentalist Specialist Kara Taylor said. “Stream Team cleanup events are an opportunity to not only restore the beauty of our streams but improve water quality, prevent flash floods and ultimately influence the overall health of our bodies of water downstream.” The Stream Team is a volunteer effort coordinated by the City’s Public Works Department that involves collecting litter and debris from specific sections of local streams.
