The City of Lee's Summit will host a free RecycleFEST on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 9 a.m. to noon at the City's Maintenance Facility, 1971 SE Hamblen Road. The event offers Lee’s Summit residents a chance to responsibly dispose of a variety of items for recycling. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that around 75% of all waste in the U.S. can be recycled yet the annual recycling level sits at around 34%. Recycling and composting play a vital role in conserving natural resources and creating a cleaner environment. By collecting recyclable and reusable materials, RecycleFEST helps reduce landfill waste and its associated environmental harm. The City of Lee’s Summit is seeking volunteers to participate in a Stream Team Cleanup on October 12. Volunteers will help remove litter and debris from a tributary of Prairie Lee Lake from 10 a.m. - noon at Upper Banner Park, located at 520 NE Noeleen Lane. “Protecting our natural resources is a priority and this is a small way to invest in the community,” Environmentalist Specialist Kara Starlin said. “Stream Team Cleanup events offer an opportunity to improve the beauty of local streams, water quality and flood prevention, ultimately influencing the health of downstream waterways.” The Stream Team is a volunteer program coordinated by the Public Works Department.   The Lee’s Summit Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) to promote this year’s Fire Prevention Week (FPW) campaign, “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you! TM” The campaign educates everyone about the importance of working smoke alarms in the home. According to NFPA, smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by more than half (54 percent). Meanwhile, roughly three out of five fire deaths happen in homes with either no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. The City of Lee’s Summit, in partnership with the Community Blood Center, will host a blood drive on Monday, Oct. 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the City’s Maintenance Facility located at 1971 SE Hamblen Road. Those who donate will be entered to win two Chiefs tickets. Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. A single blood donation can save up to three lives. The Community Blood Center provides more than 90% of the blood used by hospitals in the Greater Kansas City area, eastern Kansas, and western Missouri, saving lives throughout the community.
