The City of Lee’s Summit will accept applications from qualified agencies for 2024-25 Community Development Block Grant funding from Jan. 8 – Feb. 2, 2024. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awards federal grant funds to the City on an annual basis. These funds must be used to meet the needs of low- to moderate-income individuals and families, address slum or blight in Lee's Summit or meet an urgent need. Lee's Summit was designated as an Entitlement Community under the Community Development Block Grant program by HUD, which gives the City the authority to administer the grant funds within the community. The City was awarded $354,909 for the 2023-24 grant year. Grant funding for the 2024-25 program year which runs from July 1, 2024, through June 30, 2025, has yet to be announced. The Lee’s Summit Police Department is taking steps to address substance use disorders within the community with the Safe Passage program. The program is aimed at providing access to recovery services for individuals seeking treatment for a substance use disorder. This groundbreaking program is a significant shift in law enforcement’s approach to substance use issues and reflects the Lee’s Summit Police Department’s commitment to community well-being and a compassionate response to the challenges of substance use. On Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at 4:20 p.m., the Lee's Summit Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 13000 Block East 99 Street near S. Noland Road. Several callers reported an explosion and black smoke coming from a building and a man on fire. The building is located at the border with Kansas City, MO, and units from the Kansas City Fire Department and Raytown Fire Protection District also responded. When KCFD arrived, black smoke was visible from a large metal barn that stores underground utility equipment and houses several horses and other livestock. Employees near the building at the time of the explosion were assisting the man who had been on fire and removed the livestock.   KCFD firefighters entered the building and extinguished a fire involving a pickup truck and a diesel fuel transfer tank for a pickup truck. The City of Lee’s Summit is accepting applications for the 2024 Citizens Leadership Academy. The seven-week program offers residents and business owners a unique opportunity to learn about the inner workings of municipal government and engage with elected officials and City employees. Each week, participants get a firsthand look at what it takes to build and maintain one of the fastest growing communities in the Midwest through presentations and tours hosted by department directors and elected officials. The curriculum explores Lee’s Summit’s rich history and gives participants an in-depth look at public safety, financial management and budgeting, public works, water services, park management and the development life cycle.
