The City of Lee’s Summit and Mayor Bill Baird join the City of Lake Lotawana and Mayor Tracy Rasmussen in the selection of Carl Chinnery as the 2023 Citizen of the Year. Chinnery is recognized for his service to the communities, civic activities and legal work for nonprofits. He will be honored at the Truman Heartland Community Foundation’s Annual Citizen’s Reception in early September and its “Toast to Our Towns” Gala on September 23. On Sunday, July 16, 2023, at 11:48 a.m., the Lee's Summit Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 400 Block of SW Wintergarden Drive. A neighbor reported lightning hitting the house and starting the roof on fire. They also notified the occupant of the house. When the fire department arrived, the fire was visible from the roof of the single-story, single-family residence. The occupant was safe outside. She reported hearing a loud boom and a light fixture falling from the ceiling in the kitchen. Firefighters knocked down the fire on the roof and pulled the ceilings in the kitchen to get to the fire in the attic. Crews quickly extinguished the fire, containing it to a portion of the roof and the attic above the kitchen. Lee’s Summit Water Utilities has canceled the precautionary boil water advisory issued on July 3 for customers in the Arbores Subdivision. Lab tests conducted on recent water samples confirm that customers are no longer advised to boil water prior to its use.

In partnership with the Community Blood Center, the City of Lee's Summit will host a blood drive on Monday, July 10 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Gamber Community Center Ballroom located at 4 SE Independence Avenue. The Community Blood Center is offering Royals tickets to donors while supplies last. The Community Blood Center says now more than ever is the time to donate. Cold and flu season mixed with a decrease in first-time donors have all caused blood donations to decrease significantly over the past several weeks. Individuals who are healthy and well are encouraged to make an appointment. Donors can register at savealifenow.org/group using the group code KCJN. There are certain requirements to donate blood. On Monday, July 3, at 10:57 p.m., the Lee's Summit Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 300 Block of NW Thoreau Circle. The call initially came in as an automatic fire alarm, and when dispatch called the house, the occupants said there was a fire in the garage. When crews arrived, there was a fire in the garage of a two-story single-family residence. All of the occupants were outside. The owner had opened the garage to remove the cars and attempted to fight the fire. Crews quickly extinguished the fire, and the incident was under control by 11:16 p.m.  The fire originated in a trash can, caused by improperly discarded fireworks debris. The fireworks were being used shortly before the fire. There was no smoke or fire damage beyond the garage.
