Kansas City – Lee’s Summit Regional Airport Hangar 2 Ribbon-Cutting Celebration

The City of Lee’s Summit will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Nov. 13 at 2 p.m. to celebrate the completion of Hangar 2, a state-of-the-art facility at the Kansas City – Lee’s Summit Regional Airport (LXT). The event will take place at 2740 NE Hagan Road. Hangar 2 represents a major investment in the City’s growing regional airport and supports Lee’s Summit’s commitment to expanding aviation opportunities, workforce development and economic growth. Lee’s Summit to Host RecycleFEST Nov. 1

The City of Lee’s Summit will host its annual RecycleFEST from 9 a.m. to noon on Nov. 1, at the City’s Maintenance Facility, 1971 SE Hamblen Road. This free event gives residents the opportunity to recycle or responsibly dispose of a wide range of everyday items that often end up in landfills. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. generated approximately 292 million tons of municipal solid waste in 2018, and about 94 million tons (32.1 %) were recycled or composted. RecycleFEST encourages residents to help close the gap by recycling and reusing materials that conserve resources, reduce landfill waste and protect the environment. Lee’s Summit to Celebrate Colbern Road Improvements Project with Ribbon Cutting

The City of Lee’s Summit will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Oct. 20 at 10 a.m. at the railroad bridge on Northwest Colbern Road to mark the official opening of Colbern Road, the largest capital infrastructure project to date in the City’s history. The $30 million Colbern Road Improvements Project, which began in September 2023, was funded by the 2017 Capital Improvement Sales Tax, water and sewer funds, and grants through the federal Surface Transportation Program and the Governor’s Transportation Cost-Share Program. The project addresses decades of traffic congestion, safety concerns and infrastructure needs along Colbern Road between Northeast Douglas Street and Northwest Blue Parkway. Bob Johnson to Receive Civic Leadership Award

Lee’s Summit Mayor Bill Baird has selected longtime public servant Bob Johnson as the City’s 2025 recipient of the Missouri Municipal League’s Civic Leadership Award, recognizing his decades of service and commitment to improving the community through civic engagement. The award will be presented at the West Gate Civic Leadership Awards Banquet on Oct. 23 at the Adams Pointe Conference Center in Blue Springs.

Fire Causes Extensive Damage to Home in Lee's Summit

A structure fire on Thursday, October 2, 2025, caused extensive damage to a home in the 100 block of NE Maple Street. The Lee's Summit Fire Department responded at 5:14 p.m. after multiple people driving by reported smoke coming from the roof vents of the residence. The occupant of the home also called 911 to report the fire. Upon arrival, firefighters observed smoke and flames visible from the back and roof of the single-story house. All occupants were safe outside, both required medical assessment. Firefighters entered the building and were bringing the fire under control in the living area and rear of the house. However, the flames had spread to the attic, compromising the roof structure and forcing crews to transition to an exterior attack.
