On Sunday, November 13, 2022, at 11:43 am, the Lee's Summit Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 1000 Block of NE Whispering Winds Court. A neighbor reported smoke coming from the townhome. When the fire department arrived, light smoke was visible from a two-story, four-unit townhome building. Several occupants had evacuated the building. Fire crews forced entry into the townhome and found moderate smoke on the first floor. Crews quickly made their way to the second floor and located a well-involved bedroom fire. Firefighters extinguished the fire in the bedroom, keeping it from spreading to connecting units or the attic. A search confirmed that no one was home. The incident was under control by 12:23 pm. The City of Lee’s Summit and the Lee’s Summit Fire Department will host groundbreaking ceremonies on Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. for the new Fire Station No. 4, and Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. for the new Fire Station No. 5. The ceremonies are open to the public and will be held at the new Fire Station No. 4 location, 5031 NE Lakewood Way, and the new Fire Station No. 5 located at 801 SW Lemans Lane. Site work will begin in the next few weeks and construction of the 12,100-square-foot identical stations will start once site work is substantially complete. On Tuesday, October 4, 2022, at 4:56 p.m., the Lee's Summit Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 2600 Block of NW Bent Tree Circle. The occupant called 911 and reported a fire in the kitchen. When the fire department arrived, light smoke was visible from a two-story, single-family residence. The occupant was safe outside. Firefighters quickly extinguished a fire involving the kitchen. The City of Lee’s Summit is hosting its free RecycleFEST on Oct. 22 from 9 a.m. to noon at the City’s Maintenance Facility, 1971 SE Hamblen Road. RecycleFEST offers Lee’s Summit residents an opportunity to dispose of a variety of items in an environmentally friendly manner for free. According to the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI), 66% of Americans will not recycle a product if it’s not easy or inconvenient to do so. Recycling and composting help save natural resources and creates cleaner land, air, water and better overall health for all.
