Ice and Snow Expected in Winter Storm Dec. 31 – Jan. 1

The City’s crews will report at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 31, to begin pre-treating roadways with salt ahead of the winter storm forecast for the Kansas City metro area. Freezing rain and sleet are expected late Thursday, Dec. 31, and overnight into Friday, Jan. 1,  before the precipitation changes over to snow. Crews are expected to continue treating roadways with salt overnight; however, heavy periods of freezing rain may wash away salt treatments and lessen its effectiveness. Drivers should expect icy and slick conditions on all roadways.

Sustained winds and gusts of 20-30 mph are also expected overnight. Ice accumulations and windy conditions may cause downed limbs, trees, and utility lines. Crews are prepared to clear debris from roadways as needed.

The Kansas City metro area may see .2-.5 inches of ice and 1-3 inches of snow; the track and the timing of the storm could increase or decrease precipitation amounts. There is also a small chance for snow on Saturday, Jan. 2. Crews are scheduled to continue plowing and treating roadways through Sunday, Jan.3, as needed. Depending on snow accumulations, it can take crews 24-48 hours after snow accumulations end to plow and treat all roadways.

The City will continue to monitor the weather and update its response accordingly.
