Ice Cream Social Celebrating Missouri’s Bicentennial

Ice Cream Social Celebrating Missouri’s Bicentennial

The community is invited to enjoy free ice cream for Missouri’s bicentennial celebration on August 10 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Lee’s Summit History Museum, 220 SW Main St. The Lee’s Summit Historical Society and the City of Lee’s Summit Cultural Arts Division are hosting the Missouri Bicentennial Ice Cream Social.

Poppy’s Ice Cream, The Waffler and Tasty Unicorn will have ice cream food trucks located in front of the History Museum. The first 500 attendees will receive one free scoop. Kettle corn, root beer and additional ice cream will be available to purchase. A portion of Southwest Main Street will be closed to vehicular traffic between Southwest Third Street and Southwest Second Street beginning at 3 p.m. for the event.

The event will include free admission to the museum to tour and view the current Bicentennial Exhibit and musical performances by members of the Lee’s Summit Symphony, and Betse and Clarke, a Kansas City-based bluegrass band. Popular children’s games of yesterday and today will be hosted by Missouri Town 1855 and the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce.

Partners for the event include the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street, Lee’s Summit Arts Council, Lee’s Summit Symphony and Lee’s Summit Rotary groups. The Missouri Bicentennial Ice Cream Social is presented by Great Southern Bank with additional support provided by Elevate 114, Citizen’s Bank & Trust, Country Club Bank, CEAH Realtors, Gale Communities, Inc. and Security Bank.

Daily Closures of Section of SE Third Street Set to Begin Wed., Feb. 14

A section of SE Third Street between SE Douglas and SE Green streets as well as nearby alleys are set to close from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily beginning Wed., Feb. 14. The closures will start on the south side and then switch to the north side and will last for approximately one month. The closures will affect traffic, parking and alley access on the side of the street in which the contractor is working.

SW Hollywood Drive north of M150 Hwy and SW Summitcrest Drive between SW Hollywood Drive and SW Market Street are set to close on Monday, Feb. 5, for approximately one week. Detour routes include SW Kenbrige Xing, SW Market Street, and SW Cheddington Drive. The closures are for utility work associated with development activity. Work is weather permitting and subject to change.

A section of northbound NE Rice Road is set to close on Wed., Jan. 31, for approximately two months. The contractor anticipates intermittent daily closures. The closure will be next to the retention pond and is necessary for stormwater pipe repair. The detour route is NE Langsford Road, M291 Hwy, and NE Columbus Street. A southbound closure and detour will be necessary at a later date. Work is weather permitting and schedules are subject to change.

City Crews Completed Snow Operations Today, Mon., Jan. 22

The City’s crews completed snow operations early afternoon today, Mon., Jan. 22, after pavement temperatures rose above freezing and pavements were mostly wet. Temperatures are expected to remain above freezing for the rest of the week, and any remaining snow and ice pack should continue melting.

The City’s crews are treating streets today, Monday, Jan. 22, after freezing rain impacted the Lee’s Summit area. Additional crews were called in early this morning, and primary streets are completed. Crews are currently working in secondary streets. Streets are slick and drivers should use caution. Pavement temperatures are expected to warm above freezing after 10 a.m.
