Lee’s Summit Blood Drive July 19 & 20 to Help with Shortage

The City of Lee’s Summit, in partnership with the Community Blood Center, will host a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 19 and July 20 at the City’s Maintenance Facility, 1971 SE Hamblen Rd. All presenting donors will receive either a free Royals T-shirt or hat.

The Community Blood Center recently announced a blood emergency. Its blood supply is critically low to meet the needs of hospitals in the Kansas City metropolitan area, with 3,500 blood donations required every week to meet demand. Donors of all blood types are needed.  

Extra safety precautions are being taken at donation sites to prevent the spread of COVID-19. All donors are asked to wear a mask and temperatures will be checked at the door. A full list of safety protocols can be found at savealifenow.org/coronavirus.

Donors can register at savealifenow.org/group using the group code KCJN. There are certain requirements to donate blood. Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 115 pounds and be in good overall health. Donors can be 16 years old with written consent from a parent or legal guardian. It is also important to drink plenty of fluids and eat a good meal prior to donating blood. Appointments are strongly recommended. Walk-ins will only be accepted as capacity allows.

Daily Closures of Section of SE Third Street Set to Begin Wed., Feb. 14

A section of SE Third Street between SE Douglas and SE Green streets as well as nearby alleys are set to close from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily beginning Wed., Feb. 14. The closures will start on the south side and then switch to the north side and will last for approximately one month. The closures will affect traffic, parking and alley access on the side of the street in which the contractor is working.

SW Hollywood Drive north of M150 Hwy and SW Summitcrest Drive between SW Hollywood Drive and SW Market Street are set to close on Monday, Feb. 5, for approximately one week. Detour routes include SW Kenbrige Xing, SW Market Street, and SW Cheddington Drive. The closures are for utility work associated with development activity. Work is weather permitting and subject to change.

A section of northbound NE Rice Road is set to close on Wed., Jan. 31, for approximately two months. The contractor anticipates intermittent daily closures. The closure will be next to the retention pond and is necessary for stormwater pipe repair. The detour route is NE Langsford Road, M291 Hwy, and NE Columbus Street. A southbound closure and detour will be necessary at a later date. Work is weather permitting and schedules are subject to change.

City Crews Completed Snow Operations Today, Mon., Jan. 22

The City’s crews completed snow operations early afternoon today, Mon., Jan. 22, after pavement temperatures rose above freezing and pavements were mostly wet. Temperatures are expected to remain above freezing for the rest of the week, and any remaining snow and ice pack should continue melting.

City Crews Treating Streets Today, Monday, Jan. 22

The City’s crews are treating streets today, Monday, Jan. 22, after freezing rain impacted the Lee’s Summit area. Additional crews were called in early this morning, and primary streets are completed. Crews are currently working in secondary streets. Streets are slick and drivers should use caution. Pavement temperatures are expected to warm above freezing after 10 a.m.
