Public Invited to Comment on Douglas Street Improvements

The City of Lee’s Summit is hosting a public meeting from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wed., April 19, in the Strother Conference Room on the first floor of City Hall, 220 SE Green St., Lee's Summit, Mo. 64063, to discuss infrastructure improvements for the Douglas Street corridor from Chipman Road to 2nd Street. The meeting will allow the public to view conceptual plans and exhibits and provide feedback.

The meeting is an open house style format and the public can come and go as schedules allow. City staff as well as representatives from consulting engineering firm Kimley-Horn will be available for questions.

The project is designed to enhance safety and improve connectivity, resulting in an inviting gateway corridor into downtown Lee’s Summit. The project will re-construct the existing infrastructure that has been deteriorated over the long life of the pavement. Douglas Street would remain a two-lane roadway with improved pavement, curb, storm drainage and waterline infrastructure as well as modified access management, such as driveway adjustments and consolidations. The project would also add a sidewalk on the west side of Douglas Street, multi-use path on the east side of Douglas Street, street lighting and would relocate utilities.

In addition to the meeting on April 19, the plans and exhibits will be available online and public comments may be submitted at the meeting or online from April 19, until May 7. The website to provide comments will be posted soon.

Construction is expected to start in the spring of 2025. Voters approved this project in 2017 with the passage of the capital improvement sales tax continuation. The ½-cent capital improvement sales tax funds road, transportation-related and stormwater projects.
