City of Lee’s Summit Announces Director of Information Technology

The City of Lee’s Summit is pleased to announce the appointment of Diana Newman as director of information technology. Newman begins her position on Jan. 6, where she will provide overall management, control and direction for the Information Technology Division. Newman will lead a staff of 33 professionals and oversee a budget of approximately $6 million. Newman brings more than 30 years of experience providing informational technology and strategic leadership in both the private and public sectors, most recently serving as project manager for the City of Lee’s Summit’s Information Technology Division since August of 2023. In that role, Newman was responsible for leading the replacement of the City’s Enterprise Resource Planning Software, a complex project with a significant impact on the productivity and resiliency of the organization. Lee’s Summit Community Development Block Grant Application Period Begins January 8

The City of Lee’s Summit will accept applications from qualified agencies for 2024-25 Community Development Block Grant funding from Jan. 8 – Feb. 2, 2024. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awards federal grant funds to the City on an annual basis. These funds must be used to meet the needs of low- to moderate-income individuals and families, address slum or blight in Lee's Summit or meet an urgent need. Lee's Summit was designated as an Entitlement Community under the Community Development Block Grant program by HUD, which gives the City the authority to administer the grant funds within the community. The City was awarded $354,909 for the 2023-24 grant year. Grant funding for the 2024-25 program year which runs from July 1, 2024, through June 30, 2025, has yet to be announced. Welding on Fuel Tank Causes Explosion and Fire

On Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at 4:20 p.m., the Lee's Summit Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 13000 Block East 99 Street near S. Noland Road. Several callers reported an explosion and black smoke coming from a building and a man on fire. The building is located at the border with Kansas City, MO, and units from the Kansas City Fire Department and Raytown Fire Protection District also responded. When KCFD arrived, black smoke was visible from a large metal barn that stores underground utility equipment and houses several horses and other livestock. Employees near the building at the time of the explosion were assisting the man who had been on fire and removed the livestock.   KCFD firefighters entered the building and extinguished a fire involving a pickup truck and a diesel fuel transfer tank for a pickup truck.
