Joint Public Meeting for Douglas Street Improvements and Olive & Orchard Street and Stormwater Improvements Set for Jan. 18

The City of Lee’s Summit will host an in-person public meeting to discuss the design of both the Douglas Street Improvements project and the Olive & Orchard Street and Stormwater Improvements from 4-6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2024, in the Council Chambers at Lee’s Summit City Hall, 220 SE Green St., Lee’s Summit, Mo. The meeting will be an open house-style format and there will not be a formal presentation; the public can come and go as schedules allow. Project plans and exhibits prepared by the City’s design consultant Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc., will be available to view, and attendees will have the opportunity to discuss the projects and offer comments.

An online public meeting format also will be offered from 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2024, through 5 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 5, 2024, and can be found online at lsmo-douglas.com. During this timeframe, the public will have the opportunity to review the same project plans and exhibits that will be available at the in-person event and submit comments or questions through the online public meeting website.

The Douglas Street project improvements include roadway reconstruction to a two-lane section, one in each direction, with a shared-use path on the east side and a continuous sidewalk along the west side of the road. Other improvements include curb and gutter, enclosed storm drainage, intersection improvements, continuous street lighting, new waterline infrastructure, and associated utility relocations. The City anticipates these improvements will support the City’s Livable Street Policy and Greenway Master Plan. The project goals are improved safety, operations, and livability. Construction is anticipated to begin in early 2025, and the project is expected to take approximately eight months to complete. Funding includes the Capital Improvement Sales Tax, a Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) federal grant, and water and sewer funds.

The Olive and Orchard project improvements include roadway reconstruction to a two-lane section with continuous sidewalk on one side of the road, an enclosed storm drainage system and a dry detention basin. Other improvements include curb and gutter, intersection improvements, street lighting, new waterline infrastructure, and associated utility relocations. The City anticipates these improvements will support the City’s Livable Street Policy and Greenway Master Plan. The project goals are mitigation of structural flooding and improved safety and operations. Construction is anticipated to begin in early 2025, and the project is expected to take approximately six months to complete. Funding includes the Transportation Sales Tax, Capital Improvement Sales Tax, and water and sewer funds.

A section of Northeast Rice Road at Northeast Mulberry Street is closed for stormwater repairs. The road will be closed until all work has been completed.

A sinkhole had developed due to a rusted corrugated metal storm line. Crews will be replacing the storm line from storm box to storm box.
