Bob Johnson to Receive Civic Leadership Award

Bob Johnson to Receive Civic Leadership Award

Lee’s Summit Mayor Bill Baird has selected longtime public servant Bob Johnson as the City’s 2025 recipient of the Missouri Municipal League’s Civic Leadership Award, recognizing his decades of service and commitment to improving the community through civic engagement. The award will be presented at the West Gate Civic Leadership Awards Banquet on Oct. 23 at the Adams Pointe Conference Center in Blue Springs.

Johnson was chosen for his lifelong dedication to community improvement and his advocacy for responsible government and civic participation. He began his career teaching business administration at local community colleges before being elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in 1972. His service continued in the Missouri Senate and later as a member of the Missouri Labor and Industrial Relations Commission. After his state service, Johnson brought his passion for governance to Lee’s Summit, serving on the Lee’s Summit R-7 Board of Education and later on the Lee’s Summit City Council, where he represented District 4 as a councilmember for 16 non-consecutive years, participating in numerous committees, including Budget, Finance, Public Works, Community and Economic Development, and Legislative and Intergovernmental Relations.

Today, Johnson continues to serve the City as a board member of the Lee’s Summit Housing Authority, the Lee’s Summit Visitors Bureau, and as an alternate representative on the Jackson County Board of Equalization. In addition to his civic work, he owned and operated a residential construction company in Lee’s Summit and is an ardent supporter of the Lee’s Summit Girls Softball Association, serving on its board in different capacities throughout the years.

“It’s an honor to recognize Bob with the Civic Leadership Award,” said Mayor Bill Baird. “For decades, he has led by example, whether it be at the state or local level, inspiring those around him with his tenacity, integrity and commitment to fiscal accountability. Bob’s belief that all of us have the power to shape the quality of life in our community by participating in civic matters, speaking our minds and actively engaging in decisions that affect our neighbors truly captures the spirit of civic leadership.”

The Missouri Municipal League serves municipalities across Missouri with training, resources and legislative advocacy. The West Gate Division consists of member municipalities in Jackson, Clay, Platte, Ray and Cass counties.
