Lee’s Summit to Celebrate the Opening of Southwest Third Street

Lee’s Summit to Celebrate the Opening of Southwest Third Street

City of Lee's Summit will celebrate the opening of Southwest Third Street with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Nov. 19, at 2 p.m. The event will be held near the intersection of Southwest Third and Southwest Jefferson streets.

The Southwest Third Street Improvements Project enhances one of the City’s most vital corridors connecting to downtown Lee’s Summit. The project improves safety and accessibility while supporting economic growth and redevelopment opportunities along the street.

Improvements include roadway paving, new sidewalks, upgraded storm sewer infrastructure, improved access management and new street lighting. The project also incorporates aesthetic enhancements consistent with the downtown streetscape, such as brick pavers, landscaping and street trees, to strengthen Third Street’s role as a welcoming gateway into the City’s historic core.

“This project reflects our community’s ongoing commitment to enhancing infrastructure, with improvements that include a continuous sidewalk and multi-use path,” Mayor Bill Baird said. “It promotes reinvestment for residents and businesses, fostering economic activity and creating a more inviting entry into downtown Lee’s Summit.”

Funded through the 2017 Capital Improvement Sales Tax, the project aligns with the City’s Livable Streets Policy, supporting safe and accessible travel for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists alike. The City also received Federal Transportation Alternative Program funding for the project, and the Downtown Lee’s Summit Community Improvement District helped fund streetscape enhancements between Southwest Market and Southwest Jefferson streets.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony is open to the public. For the safety of attendees, a section of Southwest Third Street will be closed between Southwest Madison and Southwest Jefferson streets. Southwest Third Street will open to traffic shortly after the ceremony.
