Snow Event Dry Run - City Crews Preparing for Winter Weather Season Today, Wednesday, November 4

The City of Lee’s Summit is holding a snow event dry run from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, November 4, to prepare for the upcoming 2026-2027 winter weather season. This exercise is an important part of the City’s annual preparation and helps ensure crews are ready to respond when winter weather arrives.

City crews will be testing equipment and software, and driving snow routes with plows and salt spreaders installed on trucks. The purpose is to ensure all equipment and software is working properly and that drivers are familiar with updated snow routes, which is critical to the City’s snow and ice control operations. The annual snow event dry run was scheduled in advance and is not in response to any forecast.

New this year, service levels and goal times have been updated to better reflect the severity of storms, current resources, and increased lane miles.  Depending on snow accumulation totals and storm severity, it can take from 18-90 hours for crews to complete snow and ice control operations after snow accumulations end. Before, during and after storms, residents can follow plowing and/or treating progress by visiting the Snow Map and Snow Updates at LSsnow.net.

As a reminder, the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is responsible for plowing and treating major highways through Lee’s Summit including I-470, US-50, M-291 and M-150 along with the respective interchanges and most frontage roads. Visit MoDOT’s Traveler Information Map for real-time conditions during winter weather.

During snow events, residents can help the snow and ice control process by removing obstacles such as vehicles, basketball hoops and trash cans from streets. We also ask residents to remain patient - crews have more than 1,000 lane miles of streets and cul-de-sacs to plow and treat.

For more information about the City’s snow and ice control program, visit LSsnow.net or contact the Public Works Department at  publicworks@cityofls.net or 816.969.1800.

City Crews Completed Plowing and Treating Residential Streets Today, Thursday, February 20

The City’s crews completed plowing and treating residential streets this afternoon, Thursday, February 20. The sun helped with some melting today, but refreezing is likely overnight into tomorrow, Friday, February 21. Cold temperatures continue to limit the effectiveness of salt and snow remains packed to pavements even after being plowed and treated. Sunshine and warmer temperatures over the weekend will help with additional melting.
