Lee’s Summit to Celebrate Fourth Annual Missouri Good Neighbor Week Sept. 28 – Oct. 4

Lee’s Summit to Celebrate Fourth Annual Missouri Good Neighbor Week Sept. 28 – Oct. 4

The City of Lee’s Summit is excited to join communities statewide in celebrating Missouri Good Neighbor Week, Sept. 28-Oct. 4. The annual event honors the spirit of community and encourages residents to strengthen relationships with neighbors.

In 1978, President Jimmy Carter established Sept. 28 as National Good Neighbor Day by presidential proclamation. In 2022, Missouri Governor Mike Parson signed legislation establishing Sept. 28 as Missouri Good Neighbor Day and the six subsequent days as Missouri Good Neighbor Week.

During Good Neighbor Week, citizens can get involved through various events and activities to foster community and goodwill. These may include:

  • Neighborhood clean-up days
  • Block parties
  • Perform acts of kindness
  • Recognize good neighbors

The City will host “Table Together Tuesday” on Sept. 30 at Green Street, 209 SE Green St. Residents are invited to bring dinner, enjoy activities and games and connect with neighbors. The event begins at 6 p.m.

The community is invited to participate in a coloring contest. Coloring sheets are available at City Hall, 220 SE Green St., on the first floor at the reception desk or online at cityofls.net/goodneighborweek. Submissions are due by 5 p.m. Oct. 7, or artwork can be posted on social media, tagging the City and using the hashtag #mogoodneighborweek.

Research from the “State of Neighboring in Missouri” survey found that most Missourians now define a good neighbor as someone who respects their privacy (72%) and is quiet (67%). While courtesy remains important, meaningful engagement has declined over time, making Missouri Good Neighbor Week more important than ever. In 2024, more than 31,000 acts of neighboring were reported statewide.
