Fireworks in the City of Lee's Summit 2026

Fireworks in the City of Lee's Summit 2026

As the United States marks its 250th birthday this year, Independence Day celebrations carry added significance for communities across the nation. Take time to reflect on the country’s history and the shared values that unite Americans and celebrate responsibly.

Prioritize safety. If you plan to use fireworks, follow local regulations and safety guidelines. All firework-related incidents are preventable. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, there were at least 15 deaths and an estimated 13,000 emergency department-treated injuries linked to fireworks misuse and malfunction. About 1,300 of those injuries involved sparklers. The 15-to-24 age group accounted for the largest share of injuries, with burns to the hands, fingers, and head most common. Many of the most severe incidents involved devices that tipped over, malfunctioned, or were used too close to people.

In Lee's Summit, residents with a 2026 fireworks permit may discharge approved fireworks July 3 and 5 from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., and July 4 from 10 a.m. to midnight. The days for legal discharge were adjusted this year because the holiday falls on a weekend. Permits are free and available at City Hall, approved fireworks tents in Lee's Summit or the city's website, cityofLS.net.

City ordinance allows the possession and use of approved consumer fireworks (1.4G) within city limits. Prohibited items include rockets on a stick, such as bottle rockets; missiles with fins or rudders for flight; roman candles; and parachutes that release lit materials. Sky lanterns are also prohibited, even though they are not classified as fireworks. Fireworks sold at the 19 approved nonprofit tents are legal for use in Lee's Summit.

Fireworks are explosives that can cause significant harm when misused. Before using fireworks, follow these safety tips:

  • Use only consumer fireworks marked 1.4 G. Never use homemade, altered, or illegal fireworks.
  • Ensure you have enough space and respect local regulations regarding where fireworks can be used.
  • Allow plenty of space for aerial fireworks. Generally, 100 feet in all directions per inch of shell size.
  • Avoid areas with dry vegetation or combustible materials. Have a water hose or bucket available in case of a small fire and properly dispose of sparkler wires.
  • Keep small children and pets away from the immediate area.
  • Only hold a lit firework in your hand if it is designed for handheld use.
  • Do not run while holding a sparkler.
  • Light only one device at a time and never attempt to relight a firework.
  • Avoid using fireworks if you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Dispose of waste materials safely by soaking debris and separating it from regular trash.
  • Wear eye protection.

The safest way to celebrate is to attend a professional fireworks show, such as Legacy Blast at Legacy Park on Thursday, July 2.

Common complaints include fireworks debris not being cleaned up, fireworks being discharged onto property that isn't the user's, and fireworks being used after permitted hours. Be considerate of neighbors with different perspectives, and always clean up afterwards.

Lee’s Summit Water Utilities Issues Water Boil Advisory for the Arbores Subdivision

Lee's Summit Water Utilities issued a precautionary boil advisory on July 3 for customers in the Arbores Subdivision. Repairs to the water system in that area led to a loss of pressure in the distribution system. The loss of pressure may cause back pressure or back siphonage and carries with it a potential for contamination or other disease-causing organisms to enter the distribution system. These conditions may pose a risk of substantial health endangerment to...
