City Crews Preparing for Winter Storm this Weekend

The City’s crews pre-treated streets with salt during the day today, Thursday, Jan. 22, and will continue pre-treating streets during the day tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 23, ahead of a significant winter storm forecast for this weekend. The storm is expected to impact a large swath of the country with the northern edge reaching the Kansas City area. Accumulating snow and extremely cold temperatures are expected.

Crews are scheduled to work around the clock beginning Friday evening, and will continue throughout the weekend and into next week. Accumulating snow is expected Friday through Sunday, Jan. 25. Depending on accumulation totals and conditions, it can take crews 48 hours or more after snow ends to plow and treat all streets in the city.

The extremely cold temperatures will limit the effectiveness of salt treatments, and blowing and drifting snow may require crews to re-plow areas which will slow progress.

Residents can help by moving vehicles off of streets if possible. Vehicles parked on streets significantly slow progress and impact how much snow can be plowed from streets.

The City will continue to monitor the weather forecast and will update its response accordingly.
