City Crews Preparing for Winter Storm

The City’s crews began pre-treating residential streets today, Wed., Dec. 21, in preparation for the upcoming winter storm which is expected to start with a wintry mix of drizzle and light snow after 10 p.m. tonight. Crews reported at 7 p.m. tonight to finish pre-treating residential and secondary streets, and will continue pre-treating primary streets tonight and overnight into Thurs., Dec. 22, until temperatures plummet at which time salting operations will end. Temperatures will drop rapidly in a matter of hours causing wet roads to flash freeze. These extremely low temperatures limit the effectiveness of salt, and streets will be slick. Residents should use caution while driving, especially on elevated surfaces such as bridges and overpasses.

Accumulating snow is expected in the early morning hours Thursday, and crews will begin plowing streets as needed. Strong winds and wind gusts, and extremely low wind chills, are expected. Blowing and drifting snow, even after snow accumulations end, will require re-plowing of primary and secondary streets to keep them clear and could delay crews moving into residential streets.

With the forecast calling for very challenging conditions, crews appreciate residents’ help and patience. Residents can help the snow control process by removing obstructions such as vehicles, basketball hoops, and trash cans from streets.

The City will continue to monitor the weather forecast and update its response as needed.
