City Crews Preparing for Winter Storm

The City’s crews began pre-treating residential streets today, Wed., Dec. 21, in preparation for the upcoming winter storm which is expected to start with a wintry mix of drizzle and light snow after 10 p.m. tonight. Crews reported at 7 p.m. tonight to finish pre-treating residential and secondary streets, and will continue pre-treating primary streets tonight and overnight into Thurs., Dec. 22, until temperatures plummet at which time salting operations will end. Temperatures will drop rapidly in a matter of hours causing wet roads to flash freeze. These extremely low temperatures limit the effectiveness of salt, and streets will be slick. Residents should use caution while driving, especially on elevated surfaces such as bridges and overpasses.

Accumulating snow is expected in the early morning hours Thursday, and crews will begin plowing streets as needed. Strong winds and wind gusts, and extremely low wind chills, are expected. Blowing and drifting snow, even after snow accumulations end, will require re-plowing of primary and secondary streets to keep them clear and could delay crews moving into residential streets.

With the forecast calling for very challenging conditions, crews appreciate residents’ help and patience. Residents can help the snow control process by removing obstructions such as vehicles, basketball hoops, and trash cans from streets.

The City will continue to monitor the weather forecast and update its response as needed.

The City has a crew scheduled to report at 3 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 30 to monitor conditions and treat roadways and bridges throughout the morning into the afternoon as needed due to the potential for a dusting to one inch of snow. A section of Northwest Falk Drive between Northwest Village Drive and Northwest Ward Road closed today, Tuesday, November, 19, and will remain closed until the afternoon on Friday, November 22. The closure is necessary for the replacement of rusted corrugated metal storm pipe that is causing sinkholes in the road. All work is weather permitting and schedules are subject to change. A section of Southwest Georgetown Drive between Southwest Ward Road and Southwest Raintree Drive is set to close to thru traffic on Thursday, Nov. 7, and will remain closed for approximately one week. The work is necessary for curb and gutter replacement near the intersection of Southwest Georgetown Drive and Southwest Raintree Drive. The detour route includes Southwest Drake Drive, Southwest Ward Road, and Southwest County Line Road.
