This week marks National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, and the Lee's Summit Fire Department is recognizing its Communication Specialists — fire and EMS dispatchers — for their contributions to public safety and the safety of first responders. The department's Communication Specialists' duties include gathering critical information in high-pressure situations, providing pre-arrival instructions to callers, serving as a vital link to firefighters and paramedics by monitoring radio activity and ensuring their safety, and coordinating responses across seven fire departments and fire protection districts: Lee's Summit Fire Department, Fort Osage Fire Protection District, Lone Jack Fire Protection District, Southern Jackson County Fire Protection...

Spring cleanup season is here — but burning leaves and other yard waste is prohibited within Lee's Summit city limits. Fire pits, patio fireplaces, and other open-flame appliances may not be used to burn yard waste. Those appliances may be used only with seasoned firewood. Open burning of vegetation is allowed only in areas zoned for agriculture and meeting the distance requirements, with a permit from the fire department.
Residents should mulch or bag leaves for pickup by their designated waste hauler. To prevent stormwater backups, leaves should not be raked or blown into storm drains.
Thank you for helping to keep our community safe and tidy!

The Statewide Tornado Drill is on Wednesday, March 4, at 11:00 am, weather permitting. The City of Lee's Summit will activate the outdoor warning systems, school receivers, and LS Aware for the drill. It's up to you to determine the best notification method for you and your family and where you will take shelter. Here are some essential tips to keep you prepared for severe weather:
• Follow local forecasts anytime severe weather is possible. Have multiple ways to receive weather alerts in case one fails or if severe weather strikes overnight. A NOAA all-hazard weather radio is an excellent notification method at home, and it's a good time to sign up for LS Aware for severe weather notifications on your phone LSaware.net.
• Create a family emergency plan to stay safe, and remember to include all pets when building an emergency kit and stocking up on...

The Lee's Summit Fire Department responded at 5:14 p.m. after multiple people driving by reported smoke coming from the roof vents of the residence. The occupant of the home also called 911 to report the fire.
Upon arrival, firefighters observed smoke and flames visible from the back and roof of the single-story house. All occupants were safe outside, both required medical assessment.
Firefighters entered the building and were bringing the fire under control in the living area and rear of the house. However, the flames had spread to the attic, compromising the roof structure and forcing crews to transition to an exterior attack. After the fire was brought under control, crews re-entered the home for an extensive overhaul. Multiple remodels and additions...
