On Monday, July 3, at 10:57 p.m., the Lee's Summit Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 300 Block of NW Thoreau Circle. The call initially came in as an automatic fire alarm, and when dispatch called the house, the occupants said there was a fire in the garage. When crews arrived, there was a fire in the garage of a two-story single-family residence. All of the occupants were outside. The owner had opened the garage to remove the cars and attempted to fight the fire. Crews quickly extinguished the fire, and the incident was under control by 11:16 p.m.  The fire originated in a trash can, caused by improperly discarded fireworks debris. Fireworks tents are opening in the area, and people are planning Independence Day celebrations. If your plans include fireworks, remember to use them responsibly and follow local regulations and safety guidelines. As drought conditions worsen in Missouri, put fireworks safety first as we prepare for Independence Day celebrations. Sparks from fireworks can easily ignite grass and natural cover fires and pose a risk to structures. We urge everyone to consider local conditions and use extreme caution if using consumer fireworks.  In the City of Lee's Summit, residents with a 2023 Fireworks Permit may discharge approved fireworks on July 2 and 3 from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. and July 4 from 10 a.m. to midnight. On Saturday, June 10, 2023, at 8:57 a.m., Lee's Summit Fire Department responded to Summit Waves, 120 SW Blue Parkway, for a reported chemical spill. Pool staff reported a leak and chemical smell from the wave pool building.  Crews arrived and evacuated the immediate area. Lee's Summit Fire Department, hazardous materials personnel assessed the area and found that approximately ten to fifteen gallons of muriatic acid from the pool's sanitizing system had spilled from a failed distribution line. Crews turned off the system and contained the spill. Fire department medical personnel assessed the employees that found the spill with no care needed.  Summit Waves will remain closed until a hazmat contractor finishes spill removal and repairs are made to the wave pool. With great sadness, we announce the passing of Engineer Brad Faulkner. Brad collapsed at his son’s sporting event on Thursday, and efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. Brad was a 19-year veteran assigned to A-Shift at Fire Station No. 3. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Brad’s family, friends, and his fire department family.

On Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at 4:42 pm, the Lee’s Summit Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 400 Block of SE Weiss Circle. The occupant called 911 and reported a fire in the upstairs bedroom. The occupant was evacuating the house.  When the fire department arrived, light smoke was coming from the two-story, single-family residence. The occupant and pet were safe outside. Firefighters entered the house to heavy smoke conditions and quickly extinguished a room and contents fire in the upstairs bedroom. A check of the area confirmed no fire had spread beyond the room. A search of the house confirmed it was empty. The incident was under control by 5:02 pm.  The fire heavily damaged the bedroom, with extensive heat and smoke damage to the second floor and the remainder of the house.
