National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week

Today is the start of National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. The Lee's Summit Fire Department wants to recognize our dedicated Communication Specialists (Fire and EMS Dispatchers) and their work to ensure the safety of the public and first responders in the field. They are the true first responders, the first voice someone hears when calling 911 for help! Providing prearrival instructions before responders arrive and managing the response resources of six fire departments and fire protection districts (Lee's Summit, Fort Osage, Lone Jack, Southern Jackson County, Sni-Valley, and Pleasant Hill) for more than 20,000 incidents in 2022. Fire Damages Home

On Saturday, April 8, 2023, at 2:45 pm, the Lee’s Summit Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 600 Block of NW Village Drive. Several callers reported fire coming from the house. 

When the fire department arrived, heavy smoke and fire was coming from the single-story, single-family residence. The occupant was outside.

Firefighters initiated a defensive attack on the fire due to the weakened condition of the structure. The only occupant was confirmed safe outside. However, a dog was missing and believed to be inside still. The fire was under control by 3:08 pm.  

The fire caused extensive damage to the house. The fire was determined to have originated in the backyard. Embers from trash burning in a grill next to the house ignited dry vegetation and spread to the structure.

Fire Heavily Damages Duplex

On February 23, 2023, at 10:47 pm, the Lee’s Summit Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in a duplex at NW Maple and NW Main Street. The reporting party was a duplex resident who discovered a fire in the neighboring unit.   When the fire department arrived, the fire was visible from the front, side, and roof of one side of the single-story duplex. The reporting occupant was outside. Firefighters attacked the fire from the outside, then went inside to complete extinguishment and search the building. The fire was under control by 11:20 pm. A check of the neighboring unit found light smoke, but no fire spread past the fire barrier separating the duplex. The resident of the fire unit was found in a nearby parking lot and taken by ambulance to a Metro area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.  The fire caused heavy damage to one...

Early Morning Structure Fire Displaces Family

On Sunday, December 25, 2022, at 4:51 a.m., the Lee’s Summit Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 400 Block of NE Bristol Drive. The resident called to report a fire in the house as they were evacuating. When the fire department arrived, heavy smoke and fire was coming from the front and side of a single-story, single-family residence. Firefighters confirmed that the residents were out of the house and attacked the fire from a defensive position before entering the structure. The fire was under control at 5:30 a.m. The fire caused extensive damage to the building. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
