Boiler Fire Damages Commercial Building

On Monday, December 19, 2022, at 11:44 p.m., the Lee’s Summit Fire Department responded to a reported commercial structure fire at the John Knox Village Maintenance Building, 626 NW Pryor Road. John Knox Village Public Safety received an automatic fire alarm for the building. When public safety officers arrived, there was smoke in the building, and they notified the fire department. Officers located a fire on a mezzanine in the shop area, attempted to extinguish it without success, and left the building. When the fire department arrived, light smoke was visible from a warehouse-type maintenance building. Firefighters entered the smoke- filled building and extinguished a fire involving a hot water boiler and the wood mezzanine. Crews shut off natural gas and removed the smoke from the building. Sunday Morning Townhome Fire

On Sunday, November 13, 2022, at 11:43 am, the Lee's Summit Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 1000 Block of NE Whispering Winds Court. A neighbor reported smoke coming from the townhome. When the fire department arrived, light smoke was visible from a two-story, four-unit townhome building. Several occupants had evacuated the building. Fire crews forced entry into the townhome and found moderate smoke on the first floor. Crews quickly made their way to the second floor and located a well-involved bedroom fire. Firefighters extinguished the fire in the bedroom, keeping it from spreading to connecting units or the attic. A search confirmed that no one was home. The incident was under control by 12:23 pm. Set Your Clocks Back and Check Your Smoke Alarms

Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday, November 6, at 2 a.m. So as we set our clocks back, take the time to change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Also, check the date on your smoke alarms to ensure they are not more than ten years old, and replace them if they are. Smoke alarms save lives, but only if they work! You can also use the extra hour to make or practice your escape plan!

The Burning of Leaves and Yard Waste is Prohibited

Reminding everyone the open burning of yard waste is prohibited. Including burning leaves in portable patio fireplaces or pits.

Due to the ongoing drought conditions, all open burning permits issued in the City of Lee's Summit remain suspended, and it is not recommended to use any other outdoor open-flame appliances.

Groundbreaking Events for Lee’s Summit Fire Stations No. 4 & 5

The City of Lee’s Summit and the Lee’s Summit Fire Department will host groundbreaking ceremonies on Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. for the new Fire Station No. 4, and Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. for the new Fire Station No. 5. The ceremonies are open to the public and will be held at the new Fire Station No. 4 location, 5031 NE Lakewood Way, and the new Fire Station No. 5 located at 801 SW Lemans Lane. Site work will begin in the next few weeks and construction of the 12,100-square-foot identical stations will start once site work is substantially complete.
