The Lee's Summit Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 1300 block of Southeast Princeton Place on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at 10:15 a.m.

The resident noticed smoke in an upstairs bedroom after extinguishing a fire in the downstairs fireplace. A further investigation outside revealed that the enclosed chimney was on fire above the roof. All occupants of the house were safely evacuated.

When firefighters arrived, flames were visible from the roof of the two-story, single-family residence. Inside, smoke alarms were sounding, and there was light smoke in the living area. Firefighters opened the ceiling in an upstairs bedroom to find smoke and fire in the attic. Crews quickly extinguished the fire in the attic and on the roof, bringing the incident under control by 10:45 a.m.

The fire caused damage to the attic, a portion of the roof, and the enclosed fireplace flue above the roofline. It is believed the fire originated where the enclosed fireplace flue (chimney) meets the roof and was possibly caused by an ember from an earlier fire in the fireplace.

Don't Forget to Set Your Clocks Back on Nov. 7 and Something Else....

Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday, November 7, at 2 a.m. As we set our clocks back, take the time to also change the batteries in your smoke alarms. Check the date on your alarms to make sure they are not more than ten years old, and replace them if they are. Smoke alarms save lives, but only if they work!
