Fostering the Microcosmos: Supporting Diverse Biomes Through Material and Metaphor

Speaker: Sean Nash, Artist

April 12 | 6:30 p.m.
Art School KC
307 A SW Market St. | Lee's Summit

From Kombucha to yogurt and sauerkraut to sourdough starters, fermentation plays an important part in building the microbiomes that create the foods we love to eat. But did you know that fermentation can also play a role in the artistic process?

Local artist Sean Nash talks about his practice of using food and fermentation as both material and metaphor in his art over the last decade. Nash discusses how he blurs the lines between the kitchen, science lab and studio to create complex ecosystems that encompass food, community and fermentation. This lecture is a dive into his experience and fascination with integrating fermentation into his artistic practice.
