Public Defender Process

Apply for Court Appointed Attorney
If the Judge and/or Prosecuting Attorney determines you may be sentenced to serve jail time for the violation with which you are charged, the Judge may appoint a public defender to represent you. If jail will be part of your punishment and you cannot afford an attorney, the Judge will appoint an attorney to represent you. You do not have a constitutional right to have an attorney appointed if a jail sentence will not be part of your sentence.

Do not confuse this with a Public Defender of the Missouri State Public Defender's office.  The Missouri State Public Defender's Office does not provide representation to individuals in Municipal Division Court cases.
Use this form to apply for a court appointed attorney.   Prior to your court date, you may email the form to lscourt@cityofls.net, fax the form to 816.969.1155 or present it to the Judge at your court appearance.
