The City of Lee’s Summit welcomes and encourages citizens and businesses to be involved in our local government. Not only is the City guided by its elected officials, but we have also been privileged to have Strategic Planning Committees who have made recommendations to the future of our community. Many of their recommendations resulted in the need for various volunteer Boards and Commissions that meet on a regular basis.
A standing committee comprised of citizens and professionals established primarily to coordinate efforts between agencies and educate the public regarding community arts opportunities.
A volunteer organization dedicated to enhancing the overall appearance, environmental awareness and livability of Lee's Summit.
Board of Appeals
Considers and decides appeals of orders, decisions or determinations relative to the application and interpretation of the adopted building codes, fire codes, and Design and Construction Manual. In addition, the Board of Appeals also reviews updated editions to the International Building and Fire Codes for recommendation to the City Council and serves as the Contractor Licensing Board that hears matters related to contractor performance concern(s) related to building construction.
Board of Aeronautic Commissioners
Review issues pertaining to the Lee's Summit Airport including the budget, operations, FAA regulations and other appropriate matters as well as submit recommendations on issues requested by the City Council.
Board of Zoning Adjustments
Hears and decides appeals to vary or modify the application of any of the regulations or provisions relating to the use, construction, or alteration of buildings or structures or the use of land in conformance with the standards specified so public safety and welfare are maintained and substantial justice done.
Charter Review Commission
Approximately every 10 years, the City Council appoints a Charter Review Commission to review the Charter and recommend to the voters of the city proposed amendments, if any, to the Charter.
Health Education Advisory Board
The Mayor-appointed board assesses health issues in the community, educates the public and appropriate government agencies about identified needs, develops plans to address health issues, and evaluates the effectiveness of efforts.
Historic Preservation Commission
Comprised of City residents, business or property owners striving to increase public awareness of the value of historic, architectural and cultural preservation by developing and participating in public information programs and by updating the preservation program. They also review proposed changes to buildings, structures, street furniture, city parks, civic areas, public facilities or environmental features of a Landmark or properties located within a Historic District.
Human Relations Commission
Promote mutual understanding, respect and inclusion among all diverse groups represented in Lee's Summit through increased awareness and communication.
Human Services Advisory Board
Determines the human services needs of the community and develop strategies to address these needs.
Industrial Development Authority
Promotes and solicits industrial and economic development projects; as well as acquires, improves, maintains, equips and furnishes projects, including all real and personal properties which the Authority may deem necessary.
Jackson County Board of Equalization
Lee's Summit is entitled to a voting representative and alternate on the Jackson County Board of Equalization to hear and rule on appeals of valuation of property which lies within the boundaries of Lee's Summit.
Land Clearance for Redevelopment Authority
May provide the financing of any land clearance or urban renewal project within an approved redevelopment area through, among other powers, the issuance of bonds or certificates of qualification for tax abatement for property owners within the area.
Lee's Summit 360º Implementation Committee
Charged with facilitation and guidance of the implementation process of the 2009 Lee's Summit 360º Strategic Plan. The strategic plan contains a list of ideal goals that the City and its partners would like to accomplish over the next 10 to 15 years and will be used by this committee and the stakeholders as a general roadmap to assist in creating the ideal community where all Lee’s Summit residents, visitors, and businesses can live, work, and play.
Lee's Summit, Missouri Municipal Building Authority, Inc.
A 501(c)(3) charitable organization which exists to operate exclusively for civic, cultural and social welfare purposes, and may purchase, lease, construct, maintain and operate municipal office building projects and other building projects in Lee's Summit.
License Tax Review Committee
Evaluates and comments on the annual report regarding the license tax.
Livable Streets Advisory Board
Strives to make our community and streets more "livable", safe and accessible for all of our citizens. This includes improving accommodations for people who choose to walk, bicycle, drive or use mass transit, regardless of age, ability or disability.
Parks & Recreation Board
A mayor-appointed board that governs parks in conjunction with Missouri Statutes and controls the supervision, improvement, care and custody of parks and recreation activities.
Considers issues regulating and restricting the uses of land, the use and location of buildings and building height and land area for development. Commissioners review ordinances and policies regulating land use and adopt the Comprehensive Master Plan and Transportation Plan.
Public Safety Advisory Board
Advises staff on methods and procedures to improve public relations and public image; recommends improvements and has the ability to initiate investigations regarding general public complaints against the Fire and Police Departments. They receive reports on traffic activities, and reviews and studies fire prevention, fire safety, law enforcement and animal control ordinances for recommendation to the City Manager and City Council.
Railroad Task Force
Enhances communication, corrects misinformation and continues evaluating strategy for monitoring and opposing reactivation of the old Rock Island Railroad's corridor.
Established in compliance with the Charter to review district boundaries for the incorporated city limits of Lee's Summit.
Tax Increment Financing Commission
Reviews all proposed redevelopment plans, redevelopment projects and designation of redevelopment areas, and amendments thereto, and, make recommendations to the City Council concerning the adoption of, or amendment to, plans, projects and the designation of redevelopment areas.
Water Utilities Advisory Board
Reviews the methodology and calculation of water tap fee annually. Water tap fees and a methodology of calculating water tap fees were adopted and imposed in 1996 on new water service connections. Provisions in Ordinance No. 4213 and 4248 established a procedure for the preparation of an annual report by the City Manager and an annual review by the Water Tap Fee Review Committee and the City Council.
