The Lee’s Summit Police Department was recently award the Safety Champion Award by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  The award was accepted by Chief J. Piccinini on behalf of the Lee’s Summit Police Department during the annual Law Enforcement Traffic Safety Advisory Council conference on July 12th, 2012.  The award was a result of work done during 2010 and 2011 to reduce the number of accidents in the 50 Highway corridor on a section of the highway between 291 Highway and Interstate I-470.  In addition to reducing accidents, the plan also called for the creation of a Travel Safe Zone on that section of 50 highway along with public education to increase public awareness of the accident reduction program. The program was successful in all areas and accidents were reduced by 6% in the designated zone.  In addition, the Travel Safe Zone was established, the speed limit was reduced to 55 mph and the MO Department of Transportation was able to complete the installation of guard  cables in the median area.
