Lee’s Summit Designated “SolSmart Gold” for Advancing Solar Energy Growth

The City of Lee’s Summit received national recognition with a SolSmart Gold designation on April 30 for the steps it has taken to make it faster, easier, and more affordable for homes and businesses to go solar.

Lee’s Summit is the 200th government nationwide to be recognized by the Solsmart program and joins cities in 35 states that have taken actions to encourage solar energy growth and remove obstacles to solar development. For companies looking to expand, a SolSmart Gold designation is a signal that Lee’s Summit is “open for solar business.”

SolSmart is led by The Solar Foundation and the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Energy Technologies Office.  As part of the SolSmart program, a team of national experts provides no-cost technical assistance to help communities achieve designation.

“The City of Lee's Summit is committed to promoting renewable energy development and has been taking steps to make it easier for residents and businesses to go solar by streamlining the permitting process and removing barriers to solar development in our planning and zoning procedures,” Mayor Bill Baird said. “Solar-friendly changes such as these will reduce the time and expense it takes to install a solar energy system.”

The City is helping solar companies greatly reduce the cost of installations and pass those savings on to consumers. This allows even more local homes and businesses to obtain affordable, clean, and reliable electricity through solar. These actions will help encourage solar companies to do business in the area, driving economic development and at the same time help the City achieve clean energy goals.

In addition to promoting solar market development, the City is embracing renewable energy with its own solar project at the Lee’s Summit Animal Control Facility on Hamblen Road. A ground-based system will be installed at the facility this summer. The solar installation is expected to save $136,128 in energy bills over the course of 25 years.
