City to Celebrate Airport Runway Improvements at Ribbon Cutting on Sept. 27

The community is invited to celebrate the completion of the Lee’s Summit Municipal Airport’s runway improvements at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 27, outside of Hangar 1, 2525 NE Douglas St., Lee’s Summit, Mo.

Improvements to the Lee's Summit Municipal Airport include:

  • 5,501 ft. grooved concrete north/south runway, extended from 4,014 ft.
  • 4,000 ft. crosswind runway, extended from 3,800 ft.
  • 100 ft. wide north/south runway, widened from 75 ft.
  • Nine inches of pavement thickness on the north/south runway
  • 60,000 lb. aircraft capacity
  • Improved airfield lighting

In addition, the Airport now has a 40,000 square foot heated hangar space available for business or corporate aircraft and/or itinerant stays.

The runway improvements allow heavier corporate jets to take-off and land at the Lee’s Summit Municipal Airport. For example, corporate jets will now be able to take-off and land with heavier fuel loads allowing them to travel to and from greater distances. In addition, the Airport runway improvements provide business and corporate aircraft users in the region better access to the southeastern Jackson County area, the metropolitan Kansas City area, and beyond, and are expected to boost economic development and redevelopment activity in the City by providing another option for transportation and accessibility.

The Lee’s Summit Municipal Airport master plan, first approved in 1996 and then updated in 2000, paved the way for the runway improvements by calling for the north/south runway length of 5,500 feet. The earthwork project to accommodate the longer runway began in fall 2015, and was completed in summer 2016; the paving portion of the project began in fall 2016. The City received approximately $17 million in federal and state grants for both the earthwork and paving projects. The general contractor for both the runway earthwork and paving projects was Emery Sapp and Sons, and the engineering design firm was Crawford Murphy and Tilly, Inc.
