The Lee’s Summit Fire Department continued to experience an ever-changing environment during 2021, which again required a lot of understanding, collaboration and willingness to adapt. While a majority of our focus centered around ensuring the safest work environment for our employees, which allowed us to sustain the expected high level of service, we also maintained our goals of continual improvement.
The members of this department strive for excellence and this culminated in late 2021 with the completion of our peer assessment, followed by our hearing in front of the Commission of Fire Accreditation. The department was honored to receive unanimous support to earn accredited status from the commission for a second time. By obtaining our second accreditation we continued to show the focus of your fire department is to continually improve.
While it is always our goal to improve, the ongoing pandemic presented several challenges far beyond our typical experiences. As mentioned, 2021 required us to be willing to adapt, as we considered staffing strategies to continue to provide the expected level of service when faced with a great number of employees themselves affected by COVID-19. While these scenarios definitely created challenges, each was met by a group of leaders and personnel who were part of the solution each and every time. It was very humbling to see our personnel's level of commitment to meeting the continued expectations of our citizens during those trying times.
I am personally grateful to lead an organization that continues to focus on improvement and is up to the challenge. None of it can be done without the support of all our personnel, city employees, elected officials and our community.
