Biographical Statement: Cesar E. Lopez Mejia (B. Coatepeque, Guatemala; Kansas City-based) Cesar is an artist working in Kansas City. He immigrated to the United States at an early age, this event shaped his life and practice today. The works are a distillation of graphing his migratory pattern on the surface of a globe. This single curve motif is the building block for the broad systems of structures in his studio practice.
Artist's Statement: Lopez has selected sculpture to commemorate Guatemala. The works expand, contract and rearrange into many forms. The sculptures shift from a surrogate globe, landscapes, bridges and flowers of Central America. In the latest works, he articulates his memory by utilizing soil, sand, red iron oxide and coffee from Guatemala. The sourcing of the materials continuously orients the works towards the motherland.
