General Project Updates

February 14, 2023
The City is in the process of acquiring right-of-way needed to construct the 3rd Street Improvements project. The City has sent out the 60-day notification letters to acquire easements and/or righ-of-way to make improvements on 3rd Street. Property owners can contact Public Works at 816-969-1800 with questions about right-of-way acquisition for this project.

AT&T Utility Relocations In Progress

AT&T is conducting utility relocations prior to the construction of the Third Street Improvements Project. Utility work is expected to last until February 2023, weather permitting and will be scheduled in phases, with closures and detours in place during each phase.

The following traffic changes will be implemented:

  • Eastbound Southwest Third Street traffic will be detoured to Southwest Blue Parkway. 
  • Westbound Southwest Third Street traffic will be detoured to Southwest Second Street.
  • Local access will be maintained for Southwest Third Street business and property owners.

Updates are provided to the City by the contractor performing utility work. The City does not control the work.

Utility Relocation Project Updates

SW 3rd Street Now Open to Through Traffic
February 28, 2023
Both eastbound and westbound lanes of SW 3rd Street from SW Blue Parkway to SW Jefferson Street are now open to through traffic.
Utility work continues primarily in the center/middle lane as the crew is still proofing the pipe and pulling cables through the duct bank. This work is anticipated to be complete in two weeks, weather permitting.

Phase 6 Nearing Completion
February 10, 2023
Duct bank utility relocation work is currently in phase 6. The work is anticipated to be completed by the end of this week or early next week, weather permitting. After phase 6 is complete, cables will be pulled through the duct bank which may take approximately one week to complete. Select map (right) to enlarge.

Phase 5 to Begin Tues., Dec. 27
December 16, 2022

Phase 5 of the utility work is expected to begin on Tues., Dec. 27, weather permitting. Southwest Third Street from Southwest Blue Parkway to Southwest Jefferson Street remains closed to through traffic. Phase 5 work will be conducted from just west of Nichols Street to Walnut Street. Phase 5 is expected to take approximately three weeks to complete, weather permitting.

Phase 4 to Begin Mon., Dec. 5
December 2, 2022

Phase 4 of the utility work is expected to begin on Mon., Dec. 5, weather permitting. Southwest Third Street from Southwest Blue Parkway to Southwest Jefferson Street remains closed to through traffic. Phase 4 work will be conducted between Lakeview Boulevard and Walnut Street. Residents and businesses within that section have been notified by the contractor via door hangers. A second manhole has been placed between Lakeview Boulevard and Walnut Street. The contractor encountered rock during Phase 3 and anticipates more rock in Phase 4.

Phase 2 to Begin Mon., Oct. 17
October 14, 2022

Phase 2 of the Southwest Third Street utility work is expected to start on Mon., Oct. 17, with the closure of eastbound and westbound through traffic on Southwest Third Street from Southwest Blue Parkway to Southwest Jefferson Street. The section of Southwest Jefferson Street from Southwest Third Street to Southwest Second Street is expected to be back open by noon on Mon., Oct. 17.
