Artist's Statement: “Whenever I see a blank wall…I see an opportunity to communicate.” Daniel's work, which ranges from public murals to works on stretched canvas, weaves together various elements, such as characters and phrases, into streamlined designs that represent the heartbeat of the urban community. In his work, Daniels takes the opportunity to add in phrases or words that have personal meanings, where one of his favorites is ‘SUP’, which stands for “Surviving Under Pressure”. Overlapping faces and figures within the illustrations then become visual representations of people that he’s interacted with. These conversations and interactions form the compositions that signify the always transforming and growing human experience. JT Daniels, born in 1985, is a visual artist currently based in KC.

What is your experience in the Public Arts: From 2013-2016, I was the co-manager of the MAPIT (Mural Arts Program Inspiring Transformation), where I helped to identify and assess potential mural locations within various KCMO neighborhoods and business locations. I also was the artist liaison, where I was responsible for overseeing artists' applications, and application reviews and assisted artists throughout the mural creation process. Since 2019, I've been a full-time artist specializing in creating community-focused, public-facing murals. I have worked in multiple schools, nonprofit organizations and public communal gathering spaces. I also create murals for small businesses and private corporations. Currently, I have paintings in the public collection of Park University, The KCI Airport, and Amethyst Place.
