Public Artist Roster

Arts and Culture maintains a Public Artist Roster to select artists for new projects.

The Public Artist Roster will be used for the following:

  • Permanent artwork that can be site responsive and/or site integrated. Artists for these projects would work closely with the project design team to develop public artwork in interior or exterior locations. Artists selected for these projects generally have examples of past work within the public art field.
  • Temporary artwork that can be site-responsive and created with materials that have a shorter lifespan. Examples of this would be the Downtown Sculpture Walk, Rotating Art Exhibitions and more.
  • Design-only artwork is site-specific and has a scope in which the artist creates the design for the artwork. The City of Lee's Summit would be responsible for the fabrication with another entity.
  • Social Practice is an art medium that focuses on engagement through human interaction and social discourse. It can include participatory art and socially engaged art. Past experiences and proposed projects can also be included.

Biographical Statement: Emily Alvarez is an artist of Dominican and Cuban descent from the Southwestern suburbs of Miami. Emily utilizes illustration to synthesize her fascination with design and storytelling. Her work in the public art field has been featured on PBS, NPR and Telemundo, and enjoys creating fine art, comics, design work and a variety of published illustration work in the Kansas City area. You can find her murals in Kansas City, Lee’s Summit, Merriam, Roeland Park and Overland Park. Her other artworks can be found on Instagram @emily.alvarez.art or on her website at http://emilyalvarez.art

Artist's Statement: Emily implements narrative illustration to depict themes such as disquietude and internal transformation through imagery inspired by sociology and folk tales. She primarily enjoys indulging in lively compositions, vivacious color, and exaggerated motion in order to instill her work with vigorous energy. These elements converge in the mediums of digital painting, acrylic painting, murals and comics. Her work is greatly informed and inspired by her passion for animation and comics. Her work invites viewers to stretch the limits of their imagination.

Experience Level: 4-7 years

Project Preference: Murals

What is your experience in the Public Arts: I have seven years of experience with public art installations including one painted board installation, fourteen interior and exterior murals and one plexiglass installation. My public art work until now all exists within Kansas City, Overland Park, Lee's Summit, Roeland Park and Merriam, and I have been commissioned by a variety of entities from private businesses to city art counsels. My largest mural until now is 62 feet in length and I have some experience with heavy equipment or machinery to achieve elevation.
