Ward and Persels Roads Intersection Project

Southwest Ward Road and Southwest Persels Road Intersection

The Southwest Ward Road and Southwest Persels Road intersection is an important corridor for Lee’s Summit’s growing community. To improve safety and traffic flow, the City is constructing a permanent traffic signal and realigning Southwest Persels Road to eliminate the existing offset intersection. The project also includes adding left-turn lanes along Southwest Ward Road to reduce congestion and improve operations for all roadway users.

The Ward Road and Persels Road Intersection Project will replace the existing temporary span-wire traffic signal with a permanent signalized intersection. The project includes realigning Persels Road on the north side of Ward Road to match the southern approach, eliminating the current offset intersection. Improvements also include adding dedicated left-turn lanes along Ward Road to improve traffic flow and safety.

The existing offset intersection and temporary signal configuration have contributed to increased crashes, congestion and operational challenges. Shared lanes for left-turn and through traffic create delays, particularly during peak travel times. The intersection requires extended green signal timing to prevent vehicle backups and gridlock between the offset approaches. In addition, the Rock Island Corridor Trail crosses the intersection, increasing the need for improved safety for all users, including pedestrians and cyclists. Improvements have been requested by City Council, residents and the school district to enhance safety and traffic operations..
