Outdoor Classroom
The City of Lee's Summit is creating an Outdoor Classroom in and around the island at the North Recycling Center. Flower beds, a vegetable garden, a rain garden, and two active rain barrels are currently demonstrated on-site, along with artwork made from recycled rebar, street signs, and glass bottles. As funds become available, the Outdoor Classroom will be completed with more flower beds, a compost bin, an herb garden, benches, mulched walking paths, and informational boards that describe the benefits of and purposes for all of the environmental features demonstrated on-site.
The first flower beds were planted in August 2009 by the Junior Stewards Club and the rain garden was planted in May 2010 by Boy Scout Troop 195 as an Eagle Scout Project (photos below).
If your class or group is interested in participating in activities at the Outdoor Classroom, please contact the Environmental Coordinator at 969-1804 or via email.
Please check back periodically to watch the Outdoor Classroom take shape!
