Colbern Road Improvements Project

Northwest Blue Parkway to Northeast Douglas Street

Northwest Colbern Road is important for Lee's Summit's growing community. To ensure it continues to serve everyone safely and efficiently, the city is making exciting improvements. This project will address traffic flow, pedestrian access, and safety for vehicles, cyclists and walkers. By enhancing the road alignment, roundabout and capacity, the City is creating a smoother-running corridor that can accommodate needs. This will not only make getting around easier but also attract new investment and development along the way.

Colbern Road improvements:

  • Expanding from two to four lanes with a raised median.
  • Adding sidewalks and shared-use paths.
  • Replacing bridge over railroad/creek.
  • Upgrades to the roundabout and intersections.
  • Street lighting and landscaping.
  • Drainage remediation.
  • Historical and environmental preservations.

The purpose of this project is to create a safer and more efficient corridor to accommodate current and future growth needs and promote economic investment along the corridor. Issues to be addressed include the alignment and approach of Blue Parkway onto Colbern Road, the roundabout, increased vehicle capacity, pedestrian access and safety within the corridor, and traffic access and management. As the city of Lee’s Summit continues to grow, Northwest Colbern Road needs improvements for successful and safe usage to all users.

Project update as of Oct. 31, 2025. The City held a ribbon cutting on Oct. 17 and the roadway is open to traffic. Punchlist items reamin and should be completed by the end of November. The project is nearly complete.

Construction started in September of 2023 and is scheduled for completion in October 2025
