In 1865, the downtown area of Lee's Summit was platted as "Strother". The town was incorporation in 1877 and designated as a 4th Class City. The City continued as such until 1996 when, at the April election that year, voters adopted a Charter, changing the status to Charter City.
A review of the Charter was conducted by a citizen committee in 2006 and, in November of 2007, proposed amendments to the Charter were approved by the voters. This First Amended Charter is in place today.
