Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation (LSPR) is pleased to announce that Summit Ice officially opened for the 5^th winter season on November 18th! Summit Ice offers public skating, pond hockey, and learn-to-skate classes. Once again, there will be warm fire pits and stand-alone heaters.

“We are excited to offer this incredible amenity to our community,” Joe Snook, LSPR Administrator, said. “Each year, participation increases, providing an outdoor winter experience and creating memories for thousands each season.”

Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation (LSPR) Park Board members and staff held a special rededication ceremony on Thursday, September 8th, as they officially opened Velie Park after its renovation. Park Board President Lawrence Bivins was on site to cut the ribbon. 

 

Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation (LSPR) is hosting an open house at Lower Banner Park on October 8th from 9:00 - 10:30 am. LSPR invites community members to enjoy coffee and donuts while sharing ideas regarding the renovation of Lower Banner Park. Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation (LSPR) has completed an internal review of the cancellation of a private event scheduled for August 6. The review identified missed processes and miscommunication that led to the cancellation. A sincere apology is owed to the Evans family and our Lee’s Summit community. LSPR strives to be a respectful and inclusive organization where all members of our community feel welcome and appreciated. Inappropriate language, social media posts and behavior are not acceptable and will not be tolerated. The following is a summary of our investigation. On July 8, the renting party booked Summit Waves for a teen birthday party scheduled for Saturday, August 6 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and indicated 250 attendees. According to the rental forms, the event would not be publicized via social media, and fees would not be charged to attend the...

A teen party rental scheduled for the evening of August 6 at Summit Waves was canceled by Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation after it became aware of social media posts advertising the event. This raised serious concerns about the safety of party guests and the possibility the event would grow beyond the capacity of staff.

After multiple attempts to reach the renter in advance of the event to discuss safety concerns, a connection was not made until the hours leading up to the event. At that point, the only recourse was to cancel the event. Despite the cancellation, approximately 500 teens arrived in the Summit Waves parking lot.

Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation is committed to ensuring the safety of all patrons and will continue to work with the renter.
